The Story Behind Across the Universe
When I heard that they were sending the Beatles' song, "Across the Universe" into space, I knew I had to write and document the experience. I've always loved the Beatles. The plot started out as an alien girl who hears the song one day and goes off to Earth, even though the planet is prehistoric compared to hers because she wants to see what made the beautiful music.
Around the time I developed that, I got a school report on the African country Libya. This country is plagued with terrorist attacks because they produce a lot of oil. Terrorists soon became incorporated into the plot and the girl was fleeing to Earth rather than exploring for fun.
I wanted a love story, so I created Flix. Plus, I really just wanted to use that name. :D It turns out, Flix soon became a troubled boy forced to leave his home in Maine (Just like Ksenia had to flee Narooma...) and live with his wonderfully horrible father. His father just happened to be a retired rock star.
Ksenia soon became my imaginary best friend. I made her easy to relate to, I gave her my personal taste in movies and music and clothes, and I found myself doodling what I wanted her to look like in the next chapters. Everything I saw related to the story. One day I was home sick from school, and I was watching an old project runway. I started thinking, 'Ksenia would like this!' or 'She would look good in that.' and 'Flix would love seeing Ksenia wearing that. *snicker snicker*'
Bittersweet has become a part of my life now. Though I'm thinking of changing the title to Across the Universe (Bittersweet is the title because if you pay attention, every chapter has a bittersweet ending. Sweet, but an aftertaste. Or just not that tasty.), I am loving the story. I will update and write often, and you can subscribe to get email updates. I hope you end up loving the story as much as I do!
