Chapters 4 and 5

Well, here you go! This is the next section of chapters. Leading up to the good part soon, but this gets the ball rolling. Enjoy!

Chapter Four
Average

"I don't understand. Didn't your mother ever tell you the dangers of relationships between different species?" Hypate questioned Ksenia. "I mean, if you want to date him it'll be fine, but you cannot do anything other than flirt. If he was to find out about your eye, then...." Hypate stopped then. Both her and Ksenia knew the dangers of anyone else finding out about their eyes. The others who were terrorizing Narooma would come and kill them. Hypate and Ksenia shuddered simultaneously. The Naroomians had a good reason to kill. If humans found out about the alien race that had slipped past their prehistoric technology everyday, Narooma would be destroyed. Humans had an annoying tendency to assume everything unknown was dangerous. Those stupid humans, Hypate was thinking. "Everything unknown is dangerous!" Ha! Patamon would destroy them if he heard that. But I can see what he means. It's so annoying to have to keep up with this boring charade. Ksenia stopped listening then. Hypate always thought she was superior. Her name meant superior, her eye saw the outcome of arguments so she knew she was superior, and Ksenia got sick of superiority awfully fast.
"Hypate," She reminded her, "I'm not dating him. He seems the most average at the high school. His hair, his clothes, his car, his thoughts, they're all boring. If he was the least bit interesting, I would have said no. He seems like a good experiment topic though. I can see what humans think of us when they're around us all the time. I don't even remember his name! It's nothing serious at all. Can you please explain that to Patamon? Thanks." And with that, Ksenia brushed her bangs back over her forehead and ran out the back door to her other experiment topic.

She ran through several alleys before she came upon what she was looking for. A large mansion stood in her way. Engraved on the mailbox was "Stud McKean." There was a dirty fountain on the lawn, and a wilted flower garden.

She mustered up all of her strength to read what was behind the doors through her bangs. She saw blurry figures, arguing over custody arrangements. She wondered briefly if that was considered normal here and looked back at the argument. She stared in amazement as she realized she had come across the boy who had been staring at her everyday in school. As she scanned him, she discovered he was the least bit interesting. He was incredibly fascinating. She saw how he hated this man, and took a picture of something behind him. Ksenia looked and gasped. From behind the boy, the same disoriented.... Ksenia racked her brain for the word. This sleazy man. This tired man. This drunken man. Ah! That's it! She thought. This drunken man was coming at the boy with a shattered bottle. Ksenia screamed as she saw him whack the boy's face with the broken glass.
Immediately she looked around to make sure no one had heard her and breathed in relief when she saw there was no one near. She felt tears sting her eyes as the boy slid to the ground with a "thud." Ksenia watched as the man's wife came and shrieked when she saw the broken, bleeding, injured boy on the ground. Starting to cry, Ksenia saw when the wife picked him up, struggling with his weight, and with tears streaming down her face she called doctors.

Ksenia ran as fast as she could home to Hypate and told her what she had witnessed, begging Hypate to help the boy. She screamed in rage as Patamon told her it was only to be expected, that humans could be unbelievably crude at times and that she shouldn't bother to help.

"You should be the one person who would understand! I read him, and he was innocent! Narooma is doomed, but why not try to stop violence here? Hypate can pull off a disguise!" And with that Ksenia couldn't continue, she was sobbing so hard. She didn't even look as Hypate pulled on a wig and ran to the hospital. She only shrieked at Patamon some more when she heard him grumbling that the attack was only average here.

Chapter Five
Bleeding

Flix saw that Stud was coming at him. Grabbing his camera he took a picture, to sell to the tabloids. He was turning around to examine it when he felt the sharp glass slice his face. He felt agony as his legs started to give out, but before everything went black, he could have sworn he could hear someone scream. He was also positive, (because by now he knew her voice better than his own) that the scream had come from Ksenia.

* * *

When Flix awoke, he didn't open his eyes. He wanted to listen to the conversation. Knowing that adults never talked the same around children and teenagers as they did around themselves, he knew he had to be silent. He was surprised when he heard Lauren, and another woman he had never heard before. Probably a doctor. He assumed.

"I filed for divorce this morning. I just felt so awful for Felix." He heard Lauren say. Her voice sounded hoarse, as if she had been crying. "Are you sure he'll be okay?"

"I know he'll be fine. I'm an experienced surgeon. He'll have a scar or two, but nothing that bad. Is he to continue living with his father?"

"I don't know. This is my entire fault!" Lauren started crying again. "I was so selfish, and, if I hadn't brought him here, he wouldn't have gotten hurt!" The doctor started trying to soothe her.

"It's not your fault. We're extremely lucky that I got to your house in time though."

"How did you know to come though?"

"I told you, someone placed an anonymous call."

Flix stopped listening then. He knew the anonymous caller was Ksenia. He knew that she had screamed. But why hadn't Lauren called 9-1-1? Where was he going to live? He was positive that Lauren wouldn't be living with him however. He wondered randomly what had happened to his camera. He hoped that it had survived the bottle so he could expose his father for the monster he was. He suddenly realized that he should be excited. He was probably going home. So why did this news pain him? He figured this out almost immediately. Ksenia was why he wanted to stay. And the mystery she presented to him. In L.A. he would bleed on the outside, but if that was all then he would put up with it. Back home in Maine though, he wasn't even sure if he could call it home. If he went there, he would bleed far worse. Without Ksenia he would bleed on the inside.
